Recovery

You know a “vacation” wasn’t when it takes more time to recover than the actual trip.

Killing time…

Sitting in Belize International Airport, waiting for the flight back to Dallas. The woman is a bit tweaked because of the bumpy flight from San Pedro. Puddle jumpers and storms do not make for smooth flying.

It has been a reasonably good trip. Snorkeling with sharks. Cave tubing. Altan Ha (Mayan) ruins. Sleep. There were a few issues with one of our traveling companions. “If you have no interest in international travel, why are you here?” And the food hasn’t been very good. Oh well. No one died.

And I was only offered coke and ganga twice on this trip. The long-hair must throw them off.

I’m looking forward to American- style cheeseburgers and Pepsi!

Time to queue for boarding…

Sleep is good.

Surfing is good.

Reading entire novels in under 24hrs is good.

Having an ear infection while on vacation is… not so good.

<shrug>  What can you do?  I travel with everything I need to combat it.  Although on days like today, I’m not sure if the cure is worse than the infection.

My surfing lessons went well.  I only managed one face plant.  Pearled it and that was that.  Otherwise I made all of my runs.  The woman popped up more than a few times as well.

We went two-up kayaking yesterday.  A monk seal was lazing around in the shallows.  I guess he got tired after a while.  The last time I saw him, he was napping on the rocky shoreline.  We had a green sea turtle checking us out at one point.  And we rode a wave in as we crossed the surf zone on our way back.  Fun stuff.

A couple more days then we’re on a flight home.  Maybe I’ll feel good enough to surf a bit tomorrow.  If not, it will have to wait until the next opportunity presents itself.

I know there is surfing out on the Oregon coast…  Maybe it is time to learn a bit more about that option?  Maybe.  We’ll just have to see how easily I slip back into the daily grind when I get home.

To Kindle or not to Kindle? That is the question.

It looks like I’ll be going back into the field when I return from vacation.  Honestly, I’ve run out of tasks to keep me busy at the office and I don’t like make-work tasks.  I don’t mind handing them out to other people ;) , but I hate coming up with things for myself.  I don’t create from scratch.  I solve problems.  Present me with a problem and I’ll find a solution.  That isn’t the same things as someone who can come up with problems we didn’t realize we had and find new solutions.  I’m not the pie-in-the-sky idea man.  I’m more of the grimy fix-it dude.

Anyway, I like books.  I love books.  This can be a problem.  1) I almost always have one, possibly two, maybe even three reference books in my laptop bag.  Carrying around these books gets very heavy.  Hard on my body when they are strapped to my back.  Hard on my gear.  2) The woman poo-poos my reference book collection.  I have a large rolling cart jamb-packed full of books in the office closet.  I removed the bar for clothes and rolled in my cart.  3) Airlines charge by the pound.  If I don’t take 3 or 4 big books with me, our travel gear would be considerably lighter.  4) Ad-nausuem.

What can I say? The water is warm. The days have been relaxing.

We arrived on the island two days ago. We met up with the rest of the group on Wednesday then loaded into a van for the drive down to Playa Del Carman. The ferry crossing was easy enough. After a little confusion we found the house. I watched another stingray working its way across the ocean floor.

Yesterday, I had an ear plug malfunction. I tried a new pair of ear plugs and they immediately leaked. With the tubes in my ears the water flowed straight down the back of my throat. Needless to say, it was time for me to get out of the water. I’m carrying everything I need to handle problems like this. That sidelined me for the rest of the day. I finished reading Daemon.

This morning, I was feeling fine and I joined the others on a snorkeling charter. Pizza over cards, naps all around and here we are…

Tomorrow, we have reservations to go parasailing. I wonder how that will turn out…
