What? Why could you possibly need that?!?
Let me explain. I’ve got a Infragistics XamDatGrid with lots of data in it. I’ve also got a XamChart that displays the selected row in the grid. On start-up, nothing is selected in the datagrid so my active data item is null.
So what’s the problem?
The problem is when there is no data bound to the chart, it “helps” by showing you the default data sample. My users find this confusing and distracting, especially when our chart type does match Infragistics choice.
So how to fix it?
I’ve seen some comments on the Infragistics forums with solutions to override this behavior. But why bother? Wouldn’t it be simpler to hide the chart when there is no bound data instead of writing a bunch of code to load in a default/empty data set?
Here’s my solution:

I signed up for a motorcycle training course down in Cali today. “Intro to Adventure.” It’s put on by RawHyde Adventures. My wife suggested that I take an off-road training course BEFORE I buy a new big-displacement adventure bike. Sucks when she makes sense like that.
So… I’ll be catching a flight down to LAX in about 6 weeks. I guess I should skip the Ho-Hos and get back to those push-ups to strengthen my shoulder.
Sleep is good.
Surfing is good.
Reading entire novels in under 24hrs is good.
Having an ear infection while on vacation is… not so good.
<shrug> What can you do? I travel with everything I need to combat it. Although on days like today, I’m not sure if the cure is worse than the infection.
My surfing lessons went well. I only managed one face plant. Pearled it and that was that. Otherwise I made all of my runs. The woman popped up more than a few times as well.
We went two-up kayaking yesterday. A monk seal was lazing around in the shallows. I guess he got tired after a while. The last time I saw him, he was napping on the rocky shoreline. We had a green sea turtle checking us out at one point. And we rode a wave in as we crossed the surf zone on our way back. Fun stuff.
A couple more days then we’re on a flight home. Maybe I’ll feel good enough to surf a bit tomorrow. If not, it will have to wait until the next opportunity presents itself.
I know there is surfing out on the Oregon coast… Maybe it is time to learn a bit more about that option? Maybe. We’ll just have to see how easily I slip back into the daily grind when I get home.
