Taking the Plunge

October 7th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

I signed up for a track day at PIR for this weekend. I’m excited but nervous. I know there is a vast amount of knowledge that I lack. I want to learn how to “really” corner, fast, smooth, safely. Anyone can go fast in a straight line. Cornering is defining skill when it comes to riding a motorcycle. If I can learn to corner “correctly” at 90+, then navigating the cloverleaf at 35 should be easy, even when things are not perfect and/or drama ensues. Right?

So how did this come about?

I ran into a friend, Kevin Taylor, over at Beaverton Honda while I was working my way down to last night’s PADNUG session. Kevin has sold me 4 bikes over the years AND he’s an instructor for Cascade Track Time. He knew I bought the KTM earlier in the year. He had been trying to get me to come out for a track day for at least three years. He asked me again if I was going to do a track day.

“You know the last session of the year is this Sunday. Right?”
“Umm… No.”
“You got a free track pass with your new bike. Right?”
“Yeah.”
“So come on out.”
“I’ll check with Tyson to see if I can and let you know.”

I checked. My pass is still valid. I guess I’m doing bike prep on Saturday and getting up at 6am on Sunday.
