Grease under my nails

I couldn’t sleep last night. I worked in the garage until after 23:30, then spent time installing new parts on the master bathroom shower. It was after 00:30 when I finally crawled into bed. Then I couldn’t sleep. I read for a while, which didn’t help. I learned about the “Query Pattern” and that got me thinking about some development I’ve been working on for the last couple weeks. I laid in bed ‘thinking’ until about 02 when I got up to play Peggle until 03:30. I think I fell asleep before 04. The alarm rang at 07. Yuk.

I picked up new front rotors and pads for the truck on my way home from work. The Titan is overdue for a little TLC. I have never taken much interest in working on it. It’s just a huge truck and I’m not really that interested. Motorcycles are what I like working on. Otherwise, I’d rather play my drums, play a video game or write some code.

After a nap and dinner, I ended up in the garage working on the SuperDuke. I dumped the evap canister and rerouted the lines to drop behind the rear brake lever. The KTM tool kit dropped nicely into the void left by the canister’s departure. That was the whole point in dumping the thing. It took up more than half of the non-existent under-saddle space. I didn’t have enough room for tools. While playing, I removed the pillion foot rests. There goes more weight and helps clean up the rear a tad. I keep thinking about dumping all of the orange replacing it with carbon fiber. I really wanted a black bike, but the price was just too good on this ’07. There isn’t THAT much orange: lower fairing, front cowlings and rear side panels. It’s 5 actual parts or about $1,000 in carbon. $1,000!?! Yeah, that’s gonna wait for a while.

It’s still raining everyday so I haven’t ridden this week. Tomorrow may be dry in the afternoon and the weekend looks really nice. I could probably ride the FJR in the morning rain with less drama but the opportunity to carve on Skyline after work keeps me leaning toward the KTM. Tonight I looked up the KTM’s tires. They are Dunlop Sport-something Qualifiers. The PR crap says they are track ready tires. Hmm… That’s code for the wet weather traction sucks. I’ve noticed that ‘feature.’ I might order some Metzler Z6s or track down a tire with the same compound as the 607s that I had on my DL.

I got word today that DMV will allow my old custom plate. Nice. I bought insurance last week, so I’m good to go on that front. I’m still waiting for the Ready to Race and steering damper kits to arrive. I think they are still 4 weeks out.

Once I get caught up on my sleep, life will be good. Now if I could just get all of the grease out from under my nails…
