Awhile
I know it has been a while since I actually wrote anything.
What can I say? I’ve been busy.
My last contract ended. I spent just under three weeks looking for the next gig. With two week’s notice on the end of the last one, I was only idle for a week. I got a new, short contract on a Wednesday. By Thursday night we were checking into a hotel in Harrison, BC. I needed a little time away before I started it all over again.
So I started my new gig and the team lead has a personal emergency the day I start. There was a death in his family. All of last week, he was out more often than not and when he was there he was a bit distracted.
Here’s how that Monday went.
“Hi. Here’s your workstation. We do all development inside of VM instances, so you need to copy these files from my machine over to yours. I’ll show you how everything works this afternoon.”
Time passes…
“X is out due to a death in the family. We don’t know when he will return. Do the best you can with what you have.”
I had a software specification for the output I needed to generate so I spent the week coding to that. It wasn’t wasted time per say. It just didn’t go the way anyone had expected.
This week has been difficult because I am finally getting my mind around all of the components. Nothing is documented. I ran Sandcastle against everything. An hour later, I had a semi-usable doc file. It isn’t perfect but it is something. I started writing meaningful code today. That’s a relief.
I have been riding the Ducati to work every day. Today she was annoyed because her bike wasn’t in the garage. Well… “I have been tweaking things on it and you got pissed the last time you got on your bike with untested changes.” I managed to ride over my lunch hour. I think everything is good to go. That bike is amazing even as it isn’t mine or sized right for my frame. We’re the same height but I weigh at least 50 lbs more and we carry weight in different places. Tomorrow, I’ll ride the FJR. That should be an interesting shift in perspective.
So there it is. I’m still alive. No new tickets. No major shifts.
